Various – One Mind (2020, Cenobite Records) Vinyl Review: Old-School Hardcore Done Right

One Mind is the kind of hardcore record that instantly reminds me why I still love this sound. It feels focused, powerful, and full of personality from start to finish. Cenobite has always had a certain identity, and this release leans into it perfectly: dark, energetic, and absolutely locked into that old-school spirit.

“Still Here” is the track that really hits me hardest. It has that huge, unstoppable kick energy, but what makes it special is the way it builds emotion on top of the aggression. The Matrix vocal sample gives it an almost anthem-like feel, and when the acid section drops in, it pushes the whole track into another level. It’s one of those cuts that feels bigger than the room you’re hearing it in.

“Fire and Frustration” keeps that momentum going with a colder, more atmospheric edge. It has a strong sense of movement and tension, and it carries that classic Cenobite mood really well. The title track, “One Mind,” is probably the most menacing moment here, with a haunting intro that opens up into a relentless hard-hitting section. It has real presence and weight, and it stays with you after it ends.

“Say It Loud” closes things out with a slightly different energy, bringing in a more vocal, hip-hop-influenced flavor while still fitting the record perfectly. I like that it gives the release some variety without losing the overall feel. It’s a strong ending to a record that never really lets up.

Overall, One Mind is a standout 12" for me. It’s hard, creative, and packed with atmosphere, but it never loses sight of what makes hardcore so exciting in the first place. This is the kind of vinyl that feels built for proper listening and proper sets alike.
